Our Forager

Every gin made by Spirit of Hertfordshire has a uniquely wild element, foraged from the local forests, streams and hedgerows by Richard Osmond, our head distiller and botanical forager.

Before working with Spirit of Hertfordshire, Richard was the head forager of St Albans’ much-missed wild food pub The Foragers @ The Verulam Arms. He is also an award-winning writer – his book about foraging and plant-lore was nominated for the Costa Book of the Year Award.

FORAGING Experiences

This season, Richard is offering customers the chance to join him in the woods and hedgerows around the distillery for a guided foraging walk. These foraging experiences will be scheduled to begin on Sundays in March with the arrival of Spring, but gift vouchers are available to purchase NOW, and make the perfect gift for the budding forager or wild-booze-enthusiast in your life.

The WALK

Guests meet at the Spirit of Hertfordshire Distillery opposite Osprey on Woodcock Hill and, from there, join Richard on a 2 hour tour of the local edible and aromatic wild countryside around the distillery. Budding foragers will learn to tell delicious plants and mushrooms from deadly ones, learn a bit about the history and culture of using wild plant work and get top tips from Richard on cooking and, most importantly, making drinks with wild ingredients.

TASTING

When the group makes it back to the distillery, guests have the chance to sample a few of the wild concoctions mentioned on the walk, as well as to take advantage of a special discounted rate on our spirit boutique’s range of gins and cocktail ingredients.

Corporate FOragING

Richard is also available to lead foraging experiences for private or corporate events. Fresh perspectives on work and life can be found in the wild, and the collaborative process of foraging and designing a company gin in the woods can feel very rewarding.
